Illustration created for Toronto’s Church-Wellesley BIA “Pride in the Village” campaign, exploring the problem of homelessness in the LGBTQ+ community.
COVID-19 was initially described as the great equalizer; a disease that does not distinguish between or and poor, etc. This has proven to be false, with many of the outbreaks affecting people residing low-income areas of Toronto. It is extraordinarily difficult for people experiencing homelessness to self-isolate – how can one stay at home when one has no home to go to? As of 2014, over 1/5th of the youth in Toronto shelters identify as LGBTQ. The community must come together to provide shelter for our most vulnerable populations, not just during the pandemic, but going forward, in the future, so that every person may have the dignity, independence, and safety that a home provides.
Friends and neighbours get creative amidst the global pandemic, turning front stoops and lawns into impromptu bars and conversing with the community passing by.
